TABORA, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - It is located in the central-western part of the territory of Tanganyika and is entrusted to the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers).

On 11 Jan. 1887, following the division of the then pro-vicariate of Tanganyika, the apostolic pro-vicariate of Unyanembe was erected, whose vast territory subsequently underwent several reductions through the creation of new ecclesiastical circumscriptions with consequent boundary changes, and in 1897 it was erected as an apostolic vicariate. On 13 May 1925 the aforesaid vicariate had its name changed to that of T.

It has an area of 85,000 sq km with 431,000 inhabitants, of whom native Catholics number 25,748, foreigners 200, catechumens 6,307, Protestants approx. 9,000, Muslims approx. 46,000, pagans approx. 340,000. Native priests 1, foreign priests 38, lay brothers 7, sisters 89, of whom 63 are native with 7 novices; seminaries: 1 regional with 65 students, 17 of whom belong to the apostolic vicariate of T. The schools are numerous (86) and well attended. In 8 centers there is a men's and women's association for Catholic Action. A printing press, owned by the vicariate, prints a periodical in 7,500 copies.
