TABORA, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of. - It is situated in the central-western part of the territory of Tanganyika and is entrusted to the Society of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers).
On 11 Jan. 1887, following the division of the then pro-vicariate of Tanganyika, the apostolic pro-vicariate of Unyanembe was erected. Its extensive territory subsequently underwent several reductions for the creation of new ecclesiastical jurisdictions, with consequent boundary changes, and in 1897 it was erected as an apostolic vicariate. On 13 May 1925 the aforesaid vicariate had its name changed to that of T.
It has an area of 85,000 sq. km., with 431,000 inhabitants, of whom 25,748 are native Catholics, 200 foreigners, 6,307 catechumens, about 9,000 Protestants, about 46,000 Muslims, and about 340,000 pagans. Native priests: 1; foreign priests: 38; lay brothers: 7; sisters: 89, of whom 63 are native, with 7 novices; seminaries: 1 regional seminary with 65 pupils, 17 of whom belong to the apostolic vicariate of T. The schools are numerous (86) and well attended. In 8 centres there is a men's and women's association for Catholic Action. A printing press, owned by the vicariate, prints a periodical in 7,500 copies.
