GOOD SHEPHERD. - The people of Israel were eminently agricultural, and in the Old Testament the expression “p.” is often used. Moses says that a leader is needed for the people of the Lord so that it may not be like a flock without a p. (Num. 27, 17). The whole of Psalm 22 refers to the p. and the flock, which recurs also in Psalms 95 and 100. Isaiah assures that the Lord will send p. (3, 15 and more explicitly in 40, 11); Jeremiah recalls the p. (3, 15) and rails against the p.
