III. COUNCIL OF P

In 1423 the five-year term fixed by the Council of Constance for a new council in Pavia expired. Martin V, acceding to the requests of the University of Pavia, had it opened by his legates on 23 April. On 21 June the Duke of Milan indicated that the plague made it impossible for the few prelates present to remain in Pavia, where no solemn session had been held; therefore the legates transferred the Council to Siena, where it opened on 21 July. Martin V did not attend, and various disagreements, including those regarding Church reform, prevented any fruitful conclusion, so that on 7 March 1424 the Council was dissolved, with the determination that it would reconvene in Basel in 1431.
