PAVONE, FRANCESCO. - Exegete and ascetical writer, b. at Catanzaro in 1569, d. with a reputation for sanctity at Naples on 25 Feb. 1637. Having entered the Society of Jesus (1585), he taught humanities, then philosophy for 15 years, Hebrew for 15 years, and Sacred Scripture for 5 years. At Naples (1611) he founded a congregation of priests to teach catechism, preach missions, visit prisons and hospitals, and assist the dying.
He wrote many spiritual, philosophical, and exegetical works. Worth recalling are: Statuti e regole de' chierici (Naples 1614; new ed., ibid. 1722); Meditazioni della B. Vergine (ibid. 1614); Meditazioni per apparecchio alla S. Messa (many eds., the last of which ibid. 1854); Meditazioni del S.mo Sacramento (ibid. 1622). In Latin: Summa ethicae sive commentarius in Libros ethicorum Aristotelis (ibid. 1617; Lyons 1620; Mainz 1621; Oxford 1668); Introductio in s. doctrinam (3 vols., Naples 1623); Commentarius dogmaticus sive theologica interpretatio in Pentateuchum (ibid. 1635); Commentarius dogmaticus sive theologica interpretatio in Evangelia (ibid. 1636).
