PAVONE, FRANCESCO. — Exegete and ascetical writer, born at Catanzaro in 1569, died at Naples in the reputation of sanctity on 25 Feb. 1637. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1585, and taught humanities, then for 15 years philosophy, 15 years Hebrew, and 5 years Sacred Scripture. In 1611 he founded at Naples a congregation of priests to teach catechism, preach missions, visit prisons and hospitals, and assist the dying.
He wrote many spiritual, philosophical and exegetical works. Among those to be noted are: *Statuti e regole de' chierici* (Naples 1614; new ed., ibid. 1722); *Meditazioni della B. Vergine* (ibid. 1614); *Meditazioni per apparecchio alla S. Messa* (many editions, the last ibid. 1854); *Meditazioni del S. Messa - caramente* (ibid. 1622). In Latin: *Summa ethicae sive commentarius in Libros ethicorum Aristotelis* (ibid. 1617; Lyons 1620; Mainz 1621; Oxford 1668); *Introductio in s. doctrinam* (3 vols., Naples 1623); *Commentarius dogmaticus sive theologica interpretatio in Pentateuchum* (ibid. 1635); *Commentarius dogmaticus sive theologica interpretatio in Evangelia* (ibid. 1636).
