PAVONE, FRANCESCO. - Exegete and ascetical writer, b. at Catanzaro in 1569, d. in the odour of sanctity at Naples on 25 February 1637. Having entered the Society of Jesus (1585), he taught humanities, then for 15 years philosophy, for 15 years Hebrew and for 5 years Sacred Scripture. He founded at Naples (1611) a congregation of priests to teach the catechism, preach missions, visit prisons and hospitals, and assist the dying.
He wrote many spiritual, philosophical and exegetical works. Worth remembering: Statuti e regole de' chierici (Naples 1614; new ed., ibid. 1722); Meditazioni della B. Vergine (ibid. 1614); Meditazioni per apparecchio alla S. Messa (many eds., the last of which ibid. 1854); Meditazioni del S.mo Sacramento (ibid. 1622). In Latin: Summa ethicae sive commentarius in Libros ethicorum Aristotelis (ibid. 1617; Lyon 1620; Mainz 1621; Oxford 1668); Introductio in s. doctrinam (3 vols., Naples 1623); Commentarius dogmaticus sive theologica interpretatio in Pentateuchum (ibid. 1635); Commentarius dogmaticus sive theologica interpretatio in Evangelia (ibid. 1636).
