In un affresco del cimitero di Pretestato (Wilpert, Pitture, Roma 1903, tav. 51, 1), nel quale il Buon Pastore sembra difendere il gregge contro un a. e un porco, esso fu considerato come selvatico (onager) e interpretato come figuraof the devil or of heretics (Physiologus, 14). It does not appear, moreover, that Christian art drew upon the many allegories of the donkey in the classical or patristic age. From the 4th century onward, following the apocrypha, it introduces it into the scene of the Nativity and uses it as a historical element in the appearance of the angel to Balaam, in Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and, by the 6th century, in the flight into Egypt. In the Palatine graffito, the donkey is probably a blasphemous figure of the Crucified.
