PORTA, CARLO. - Poet, b. in Milan on June 15, 1776, d. there on Jan. 5, 1821. He always lived in his city, employed at the Finance Administration, in constant contact with the entire cultural world of Milan.
Of liberal ideas and deep Romantic faith, P. took as the subject of his vigorous social satire the conditions of Lombard life during the Austrian Restoration, and as the instrument of his vivid popular realism the Milanese dialect. The greatness of his poetry lies in the power of representing human passions as they are, in the fullness of an elementary psychology, and, for that very reason, crude and confrontational. The chief object of his verses was anticlerical satire, extremely violent and scurrilous, perhaps dictated more by social resentments than by religious impiety. Rota has demonstrated that P.'s anticlericalism derives from the very nature — not religious and moral, but political — of the Lombard Jansenist milieu, and from the inevitable popular reactions.
