Port-de-Paix, Diocese of

PORTO PACE (PORT-DE-PAIX), DIOCESE of. – City and diocese of the Republic of Haiti, suffragan of the archdiocese of Porto Principe, capital of the Noroeste department.

It has an area of 3,600 sq. km and a population of 180,000, of whom 160,000 are Catholics distributed among 49 churches and 10 parishes, served by 24 regular priests; it has 1 male and 7 female religious communities, 1 male and 5 female educational institutes (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 326).

The diocese was created on 3 Oct. 1861 by Pope Pius IX; but its erection took place only in 1928.
