QUÉTIF, JACQUES. - Dominican scholar and historian, b. in Paris on 6 Aug. 1618, d. there on 2 March 1698.
He professed in the convent of the Most Holy Annunciation on 19 Sept. 1635, studied at Saint-Maximin (Brignoles, Var) and at Bordeaux. From 1652 he was again in Paris. He is especially deserving for the literary history of his Order, having undertaken a collection of bio-bibliographical notices concerning more than 2,000 Dominican writers, of which about 800 were complete. His confrère J. Echard (d. in 1724) would bring the work to completion, refining and doubling the collection, and publishing it under the title Scriptores Ordinis Praedicatorum recensiti, notisque historicis et criticis illustrati (2 vols., Paris 1719-21); a colossal work, of great historical and literary value.
