QUÉTIF, JACQUES. - Erudite and historical Dominican, b. in Paris on 6 Aug. 1618, d. there on 2 Mar. 1698.
He professed in the convent of the Most Holy Annunciation on 19 Sept. 1635, studied at Saint-Maximin (Brignoles, Var) and at Bordeaux. From 1652 he was again in Paris. He is especially deserving for the literary history of his Order, having undertaken a collection of bio-bibliographical information concerning more than 2,000 Dominican writers, of which about 800 are complete. His confrere J. Echard (d. in 1724) completed the work, perfecting and doubling the collection, and publishing it under the title Scriptores Ordinis Praedicatorum recensiti, notisque historicis et criticis illustrati (2 vols., Paris 1719-21); a colossal work of high historical and literary value.
