RINGWALDT, BARTHOLOMÄUS. - German poet, b. in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1530, Lutheran pastor of Langenfeld in der Neumark, where he d. in 1599.

He was the author, among other things, of the very widely circulated satirical poem Der treue Echart, a vision of Paradise and Hell whose inhabitants, through their confessions, paint a vivid picture of the vices of that time; of the didactic poem Die lautere Wahrheit, which treats of the duties of religious knighthood in contrast with those of the worldly warrior; and of the comedy Speculum mundi, which sketches a realistic description of the intemperance of the nobility. R., who in his satire represents the moral point of view of the evangelical middle class, is a keen and impartial observer and painter of customs: his poetry, richly interwoven with conceits and popular expressions, has, besides its documentary value for the history of civilization and of manners, no negligible artistic merits.
