RINNOVAMENTO, IL. - A semiannual review published in Milan from Jan. 1907 to Dec. 1909, with the subtitle Critical Review of Ideas and Facts. Its editorial board consisted of A. A. Alfieri, A. Casati, and F. T. Gallarati-Scotti, all laymen.
The programme, modernist in tone, was reflected in historical and philosophical articles which subjected every idea solely to the contingent scale of truth then held to be such, and not at all to the authority of the pronouncements of any Roman congregation. The editors of the review,
from the appearance of the first issue (29 Apr. 1907), received a warning from the Congregation of the Index; on 5 Nov. Card. Ferrari prohibited its reading in Milan, and on 23 Dec. pronounced major excommunication against the editors and contributors. All these particular condemnations were shortly afterwards automatically included in the general condemnation of dogmatic modernism, proclaimed by the decree Lamentabili (3 July 1907) and the encyclical Pascendi (8 Sept. 1907).
