SA, CHRISTOVÃO da. - Archbishop of Goa, C. da S. or da Lisbona, his native city, professed on 9 June 1584 in the convent of Belem of the Order of the Gerosolimitani; he died at Goa on 31 March 1622.
On 30 Aug. 1604 he was appointed bishop of Malacca and was consecrated on 21 Nov. of the same year at Belem. In the spring of the following year he left for his diocese. In 1610 he was transferred to the archdiocese of Goa. On 17 July 1613 he laid the foundation stone of the new Cathedral in his residence. Paolo V, by a brief of 6 Feb. 1616, entrusted him with the delimitation of the dioceses of Granganore and Cocino.
S. opposed the method of evangelization De Nobili (v.) and in Feb. 1619 convened a new conference at Goa to examine the question, sending its proceedings to Rome. He died at Goa before the Roman decision had arrived.
