ŠAMMAJ

SHAMMAI. - A distinguished Jewish doctor who taught between 20 B.C. and 25/30 A.D.

He was a contemporary of Hillel (v.) and his rival. In contrast to Hillel, Š. was considered rigorous. In the controversies of a preceptive nature between him and Hillel, Š. is named first as the elder. The same difference of opinions is then found in the two schools; although rigorous in his decisions, Š. was also of a gentle disposition.
