SCUOLA ITALIANA MODERNA. - It is the oldest and most widely circulated journal for Italian teachers, conceived in 1891 and first published in 1893 by G. Tovini (v.), so that it might serve as a safeguard for the faith of practising Catholic teachers and offer the compelling attraction of assistance in better fulfilling the delicate task of schooling.
After a difficult initial period, in 1904 Brescian Catholics founded the non-profit Society «La Scuola», with the sole purpose of promoting the journal and extending the effectiveness of its apostolate. From then until now its growth has been, thanks to God, continuous and fruitful.
From S. I. M. there arose: Scuola materna, for kindergarten teachers; Supplemento pedagogico, for teachers; Educazione for families; publications on religion, philosophy, pedagogy, teaching methods, art, and culture for educators. Textbooks for elementary and secondary schools; educational and enjoyable books for young people and adults; teaching aids: projection apparatuses with a varied and abundant supply of related material, coloured wall charts.
Since 1937, the large printing and lithographic establishment, together with premises for editorial work, administration, dispatch, teaching aids, warehouses, and refectory, has covered an area of 14,000 square metres. It employs 250 persons.
