SILVESTER IV, ANTIPOPE. — Magnulfus, a Roman archdeacon. During the conflict over investitures with Henry IV, Paschal II had pronounced a sentence of excommunication against him.

The partisans of the Emperor seized the opportunity of Paschal’s absence from Rome to place him on the papal throne (18 Nov. 1105) under the name of Sylvester IV. He fell into the hands of Paschal and abdicated under order from Henry IV. At the time of the Concordat with Henry V, the antipope was compelled to renew his abdication and promised obedience to Paschal II (April 1111).
