Vicarious Satisfaction

SODDISFAZIONE VICARIA. – Etymologically (satis facere), the term indicates sufficient compensation, in place of and on behalf of a person, for a material or moral debt for which that person, through personal fault, is indebted in justice to a third party. In theology, the term occurs in the concept of the Redemption accomplished by Jesus Christ on our behalf (for which V. REDENZIONE) and in the concept of the Mystical Body and the Communion of Saints (for which V. the relevant entries).
