VICARIOUS SATISFACTION. - Etymologically (satis facere) it indicates sufficient compensation, in the place of and on behalf of a person, for a material or moral debt of which that person is, through their own fault, a debtor, in justice, toward a third person. In theology the term occurs in the concept of the Redemption wrought by Jesus Christ in our favor (for which v. REDENZIONE) and in the concept of the Mystical Body and of the Communion of Saints (for which v. the relevant entries).
