It comprises the residence of Teluk-Betung (formerly Lampong) and the district of Kroe (from the residence of Benkulu), detached from the mission of Palembang and erected as an apostolic prefecture on 19 June 1952. Like its mother mission, it is entrusted to the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It covers an area of 35,000 sq km. At the time of its erection, out of a total population of approximately 1,000,000 inhabitants, there were 2,015 Catholics; 6 priests, 1 lay brother, 9 seminarians, and 22 sisters. Among its works were 2 colleges, 2 hospitals, 1 orphanage, and 8 sacred buildings including churches and chapels. The schools numbered 7 elementary and 3 secondary.

The evangelization of T. is very recent; the faithful are almost all gathered in four Christian communities: T. K., founded in 1928; Pringsewu, founded in 1932; Metro, founded in 1937; and Teluk-Betung, founded in 1949. The Christian community of Pasuruan, founded in 1938, was destroyed and subsequently abandoned during the war and has not yet been reopened; the Catholics moved to Metro.
