TANDJUNG-KARANG, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - In the southern part of the island of Sumatra.
It comprises the residency of Teluk-Betung (formerly Lampong) and the district of Kroe (from the residency of Benkulu), detached from the mission of Palembang and erected as an apostolic prefecture on 19 June 1952. Like the mother mission, it is entrusted to the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It has an area of 35,000 sq. km. At the time of its erection, out of a total population of approximately 1,000,000 inhabitants, there were 2,015 Catholics; 6 priests, 1 lay brother, 9 seminarians, and 22 sisters. Its works included 2 colleges, 2 hospitals, 1 orphanage, and 8 sacred buildings, including churches and chapels. The schools: 7 elementary and 3 secondary.
