TAMING [DAMING], Diocese of. - At the southern extremity of the province of Hopeh, in northern China.

It was erected as an apostolic prefecture on 11 March 1935 with 7 civil sub-prefectures of the mission of Sienhsien (v.) and was entrusted to the Society of Jesus, which sends there for the apostolic work the religious of the Hungarian regular province. On 10 July 1947 it was elevated to a diocese, suffragan of Peking.

It has an area of 8,640 sq km. As of 30 June 1947, out of a total population of about 2,000,000 inhabitants, Catholics numbered 42,409; priests 34, of whom 9 were Chinese; major seminarians 8; lay brothers 21, of whom 10 were Chinese; sisters 30, of whom 13 were native. Among the works were 6 medicine dispensaries, 1 orphanage, 1 home for the aged, 32 schools with 1,008 pupils.

The evangelization of T., through the work of the Jesuits of Sienhsien, began in the second half of the last century: in 1857 there were neither Christian communities nor Christians; by 1861 these numbered 6, increasing to 12 in 1864 and forming a Christian community. In 1880 the Christian communities were 23 and the faithful 399, rising respectively to 408 and 8,732 in 1910 and to 920 and 36,002 in 1934, the year preceding the erection of T.
