VOS, JOHANNES. - Ascetical theologian, b. at Heusden (Holland) in 1363, d. at Windesheim in 1426. He studied at the capitular school of Deventer, where he became a friend of F. Radewijns, who recommended him to Gerard Groote on account of his abilities as a copyist.

He entered the Brothers of the Common Life of Deventer under the direction of Radewijns, but moved to Windesheim (v.) as soon as its Congregation was founded (1387); for his qualities of mind and heart he was soon elected prior there (1391). In 1395 he became "prior superior" of the new "capitulum" of Windesheim, which comprised 4 houses. Under his governance the Congregation of Windesheim had an intense life; it counted fully 24 male houses and 4 female houses when V. died. He codified its Constitutiones; he defended its rights, among other things at the Council of Constance (1419), with Henry of Ahaus (v.), against Matthew Grabow O.P. He imparted a fervent rhythm to the convent of Windesheim, especially in the work of copying.

V. left: Sermo... de patribus primitivis and Testamentum. The Epistola de vita et passione D.N.J.C. et aliis devotis exercitiis, whose method V. followed in his life of prayer, cannot with good grounds be attributed to him.
