DECREE ON THE POSTULANCY IN MONASTERIES OF SOLEMN VOWS.

1 In order that the purpose of religious life to be professed perpetually may be better explored, and that greater provision may be made for the dignity of the religious state, with defections diminished insofar as it is possible, the Eminent and Most Reverend Cardinal Fathers of the Sacred Congregation for Religious, in plenary meetings held at the Vatican on 2 August 1912, decreed the following, namely:

2 1. Any Postulant in Monasteries of solemn vows and papal enclosure may be admitted without prior permission of the Holy See, provided that other requirements of law are observed.

3 2. Any Postulant, before entering the Novitiate, shall be tested for a period of time and in the manner prescribed in the Constitutions of each Monastery.

4 3. If nothing is determined in these regarding this matter, then the testing shall be made for at least six months, provided that Postulants, admitted within the enclosure of the Monastery for the purpose of testing, shall wear a garment of modest colour, different

5 from the habit of the Order, which they shall not put on unless when they are about to begin the Novitiate properly so called.

6 When a faithful report of all these matters had been made to our most holy Lord Pius Pope X by the undersigned Secretary of the Sacred Congregation on 5 August 1912, His Holiness deigned to approve and confirm the same. Notwithstanding any contrary provisions whatsoever. Given at Rome, from the Secretariat of the Sacred Congregation for Religious, on 15 August 1912.
