Ubi gratiae
Bull revoking permissions for women to enter monasteries
to any women whatsoever of entering monasteries of any Order of regular religious; and the prohibition of using such licenses for cases of necessity to be granted, except when urgent necessities themselves press; and a declaration that the prelates of nuns, in cases of necessity, and with few accompanying religious, may enter.
Gregory, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
1 When favors and indults granted by this See are known to bring inconvenience in the course of time, it is expedient that they be removed by the wholesome counsel of the presiding authority.
2 § 1. Therefore, desiring to consult the peace and tranquility of nuns, and to remove all impediments which draw them away from the practice of spiritual matters and the exercise of religious and virtuous works, and to avert dangers and scandals from them, by the authority of these presents, we revoke and abolish all and every licenses and faculties of entering monasteries, houses and places of nuns, and also of men of any Orders whatsoever, to any persons whatsoever, even countesses, marchionesses, and others entering monasteries by virtue of licenses.
3 Penalties for religious admitting them.
4 Prohibition of using licenses in cases of necessity and others, to women of any status and condition whatsoever, and also all and every licenses of entering monasteries, houses and places of the same nuns to any men whatsoever, even of the same status and dignity, whether granted by our predecessors, and also by us and the legates of the Apostolic See or others for any causes whatsoever, however urgent, under any tenors whatsoever, and even with derogations of derogations, restorations of revocations and other more efficacious clauses, and with irritant and other decrees, even by our own motion and from certain knowledge, and from the fullness of apostolic power, and at the contemplation or supplication of emperors, kings, queens and other princes, confirmed and also renewed several times. And we annul and revoke the letters drawn up concerning this and the processes made by means of the same.
5 § 2. Forbidding those same persons who have obtained them, under the penalty of excommunication incurred by the very fact, from which no one except the Roman Pontiff (except in the article of death) can obtain the benefit of absolution, that they dare not, under the pretext of the same licenses, enter such monasteries in any way whatsoever.
6 § 3. But to abbesses and also to abbots, convents and other superiors of monasteries of both sexes and persons, by whatever name they are called, we strictly command, under the same penalty of excommunication and also of deprivation of their dignities, benefices and offices, and of incapacity to obtain them and others in the future, that they do not allow or permit anyone to enter their monasteries, houses and places under the pretext of such licenses and facilities.
7 § 4. Moreover, under the same penalties incurred by the very fact, we prohibit and interdict all and every ecclesiastical and secular persons, and also of any Orders whatsoever, even of the Mendicant Orders, regular religious, that, under the pretext of licenses granted by bishops or superiors, to whom the granting of them is granted only in cases of necessity by the decree of the Council of Trent, they do not presume to enter the monasteries themselves of nuns at their pleasure, but only when urgent necessities press.
8 § 5. Notwithstanding the foregoing and apostolic constitutions and ordinances; and the statutes and customs of the aforesaid monasteries and Orders, strengthened by oath, apostolic confirmation or any other firmness; and also privileges, exemptions and apostolic indults granted and confirmed to them and their aforesaid superiors and to all others whatsoever by whatever Roman Pontiffs, our predecessors and us and the said See, under whatever tenors and forms and with whatever clauses and decrees, and also renewed several times; all of which, their tenors being held as if inserted word for word in these presents, as sufficiently expressed, while they would otherwise remain in their force, we derogate from them in this instance only, specially and expressly, and from all other things contrary whatsoever.
9 § 6. Since, however, it would be difficult for these presents to be carried to all places, we will that copies of them, even printed, furnished with the hand of a notary public and the seal of a person established in ecclesiastical dignity, be given the same credence in judgment and outside it everywhere, which would be given to these presents, if they were exhibited or shown.
