BRITTAIN, THOMAS LEWIS

BRITTAIN, THOMAS LEWIS. - Predicatore e scrittore domenicano inglese, n. presso Chester nel 1744 e m. ad Hartbury C. (Gloucester) il 3 maggio 1827. Convertitosi a 16 anni dal protestantesimo, studiò in Piccardia e poi a Lovanio. Entrò tra i Domenicani a Bornhem (1767), dove fu poi anche professore e reggente degli studi. Nel 1790 ottenne il magistero in teologia. Fu priore prima a Gloucester e poi a Londra, infine provinciale dal 1814 al 1818.
Predicatore, apologista e professore «in humanioribus» presso la gioventù inglese, scrisse: Rudiments of English Grammar (Londra 1790, una grammatica che fece epoca); Principles of the Cristian Religion and Catholic Faith Investigated (ivi 1790); The divinity of Jesus Christ and Beati- ties of His Gospels (ivi 1822); Collection of Poems Occa- sionally Written (Cheltenham 1822).
