2 E lodato URBANO VIII. per perpetua memoria della cosa. Benché altrimenti il felicemente ricordato Papa Clemente Ottavo, Nostro Predecessore, abbia provveduto che l'opera di insigni uomini versati nelle cerimonie e nei riti pontificali fosse corretta e restaurata da ogni parte nel Pontificale: tuttavia col succedere del tempo si è trovato che molti errori di nuovo nel medesimo Pontificale, parte per ignoranza, parte per negligenza, o per altra causa, si erano introdotti.

3 Onde abbiamo ritenuto che fosse cura della Nostra sollecitudine pastorale, di applicare l'animo a una nuova correzione del Pontificale, il quale è norma delle cerimonie e dei riti, di cui i Cattolici Antistiti nella funzione dei loro uffici devono servirsi. Perciò, affinché il medesimo Pontificale fosse di nuovo stampato con la massima diligenza dalla Nostra autorità, abbiamo affidato la correzione degli errori, che in esso, come si è detto, si erano introdotti, ai Nostri Venerabili Fratelli Cardinali della Santa Romana Chiesa, e ad altri uomini insigni per dottrina e pietà, esperti nelle cerimonie e nei riti pontificali; la cui opera, poiché il predetto Pontificale fu da essi accuratissimamente ripurgato da tutti i difetti e gli errori di cui era pieno, Noi, affinché tanto esatta industria e diligenza dei Cardinali e degli altri predetti in questo affare non rimanesse priva dell'effetto desiderato, abbiamo ordinato al diletto figlio Andrea Brogiotto, Prefetto della Nostra Tipografia Apostolica, di provvedere all'edizione del Pontificale emendato con eleganti caratteri e forma insigne: quale esemplare tutti coloro che in seguito stamperanno il Pontificale Romano dovranno seguire.

4 Fuori della Città vogliamo che a nessuno sia lecito in avvenire stampare o divulgare il medesimo Pontificale, se non abbia ricevuto facoltà per iscritto dagli Inquisitori dell'eretica pravità, qualora vi siano; altrimenti, dagli Ordinari dei luoghi.

5 Che se alcuno in qualsiasi modo contro il prescritto Pontificale Romano, o il Tipografo lo avrà stampato, o il Libraio avrà venduto il Pontificale di nuovo stampato, fuori del Nostro dominio ecclesiastico incorrano nella pena della scomunica latæ sententiæ, dalla quale, se non da parte del Romano Pontefice (eccetto coloro che si trovano in articolo di morte) non possono essere assolti; coloro invece che dimorano nell'alma Città e nel resto dello stato ecclesiastico incorrano irremissibilmente, senza altra dichiarazione, nelle pene di cinquecento ducati d'oro della Camera e della confisca di tutti i libri e caratteri tipografici, da applicarsi alla medesima Camera; e inoltre i Pontificali stampati o divulgati senza la predetta facoltà siano per ciò stesso proibiti.

6 Gli Inquisitori invece e gli Ordinari dei luoghi non concedano la presente facoltà, se non dopo aver diligentemente confrontato il Pontificale tanto prima quanto dopo la stampa con questo medesimo esemplare divulgato dalla Nostra autorità, e non abbiano riconosciuto che nulla vi sia stato aggiunto o tolto: nella medesima facoltà poi, il cui esemplare sia sempre aggiunto al principio o alla fine di qualsiasi Pontificale stampato, facciano menzione di proprio pugno, in modo assoluto, di tale confronto e della conformità riscontrata tra l'uno e l'altro Pontificale, sotto pena agli Inquisitori della privazione dei loro uffici e dell'inabilità a conseguirli e altri in avvenire: agli Ordinari dei luoghi invece della sospensione dai Divini uffici e dell'interdetto dall'ingresso della Chiesa; ai loro Vicari della privazione dei loro uffici e benefici e dell'inabilità a conseguirli e altri in avvenire, nonché della scomunica da incorrersi senza altra dichiarazione. Ingiungamo inoltre ai Nostri Nunzi, dovunque dimorino, che vigilino diligentemente su questo affare e provvedano che tutto sia eseguito secondo il prescritto della Nostra volontà. Non ostante le licenze, gli indulti e i privilegi di stampare Pontificali concessi da Noi o dai Romani Pontefici Nostri Predecessori fino ad ora a qualsiasi Tipografo, i quali per il presente espressamente revochiamo e vogliamo siano revocati; nonché le costituzioni e ordinazioni generali e speciali edite, confermate e approvate in contrario di quanto sopra in qualsiasi modo. A tutte le quali, benché di esse e dei loro interi tenori dovesse farsi speciale, specifica ed espressa menzione, tenendo i tenori medesimi per espressi nel presente, in questa sola occasione specialmente ed espressamente deroghiamo, e a tutte le altre cose contrarie. Vogliamo però che agli esemplari delle presenti Nostre lettere, anche se stampati negli stessi Pontificali, o sottoscritti di mano di alcun Notaio pubblico e muniti del sigillo di alcuna persona costituita in dignità ecclesiastica, sia prestata la medesima fede che si presterebbe alle presenti medesime, se fossero esibite o mostrate.

Although our Predecessor of happy memory, Pope Clement VIII, took care that the work of distinguished men versed in Pontifical ceremonies and rites should be corrected and restored everywhere in the Pontifical: nevertheless in the course of time it was discovered that many errors had again crept into this Pontifical, partly through ignorance, or carelessness, or for some other reason.

3 Wherefore we deemed it to be the concern of our Pastoral care to turn our attention to a new correction of the Pontifical, which is the norm of the Ceremonies and rites which Catholic Bishops ought to use in the discharge of their duties. For this reason, so that the same Pontifical might again be printed with the greatest accuracy by our authority, we entrusted the correction of the errors which, as aforesaid, had crept into it, to our Venerable Brethren the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, and to other men distinguished in learning and piety, skilled in Pontifical Ceremonies and rites; and when the aforesaid Pontifical had been most carefully purged by their work of all the faults and errors with which it abounded, We, lest so exact an industry and diligence of the Cardinals and others aforesaid in this matter should be frustrated of its desired effect, commanded our beloved son Andrew Brogiotto, Prefect of our Apostolic Press, to undertake the publication of this corrected Pontifical in elegant type and distinguished form: which exemplar all those who shall hereafter print the Roman Pontifical are bound to follow.

4 But outside the City we will that it be lawful for no one hereafter to print or publish the same Pontifical by type, unless he shall have obtained permission in writing from the Inquisitors of heretical depravity, if they be present there; if not, from the Ordinaries of the places.

5 But if anyone in any manner shall have printed against this prescription the Roman Pontifical, or a Printer shall have printed it newly, or a Bookseller shall have sold the newly printed copy, outside our Ecclesiastical dominion they shall be subject to the penalty of excommunication latae sententiae, from which, unless by the Roman Pontiff (except for those in the article of death), they cannot be absolved; but those dwelling in the Eternal City and in the rest of the Ecclesiastical state shall incur without any other declaration the penalties of five hundred gold ducats from the Camera and the loss of all books and types to be applied to the same Camera, irremissibly; and nevertheless Pontificals printed or published without the aforesaid permission shall by that very fact be considered prohibited.

6 But the Inquisitors and the Ordinaries of places shall not grant this permission before they shall have diligently compared the Pontifical both before and after printing with this very exemplar published by our authority, and shall have ascertained that nothing has been added to or taken away from them: and in the permission itself, a copy of which shall always be added at the end or beginning of any printed Pontifical, they shall make mention in their own hand absolutely of this collation, and of the conformity found between the two Pontificals, under penalty to the Inquisitors of deprivation of their offices and of incapacity to obtain them and others hereafter: but to the Ordinaries of places, of suspension from the Divine Office and of interdict from entering the Church; and to their Vicars, of deprivation of their offices and benefices and of incapacity to obtain them and others hereafter, as well as of excommunication to be incurred without any other declaration. We enjoin moreover our Nuncios dwelling everywhere to watch diligently over this matter and to ensure that all things are done according to the prescription of this our will. Notwithstanding any licenses, indults, and privileges for printing Pontificals whatsoever granted to any Printers by Us or by the Roman Pontiffs our Predecessors hitherto, which by these presents we expressly revoke and will to be revoked; as well as constitutions and ordinances general and special issued, confirmed, and approved to the contrary of the foregoing in any manner whatsoever. All of which, even if special, specific, and express mention ought to be made of them and their whole tenors, we hold the tenors of these presents as expressed, and in this instance only we specially and expressly derogate from them, and from all other things to the contrary whatsoever. But we will that copies of these our letters, even those printed in the Pontificals themselves, or subscribed by the hand of some public Notary, and furnished with the seal of some person constituted in Ecclesiastical dignity, shall receive the same credence which would be given to these presents themselves, if they were exhibited or shown.
