ABAD y QUEIPO, MANUEL JOSÉ. — Spanish magistrate and prelate, b. in Asturias (Spain) in 1749, d. in 1825. Having gone to Michoacán (New Spain) as a judge and later appointed bishop, he sought to promote a policy of conciliation to prevent Mexico’s separation from Spain by pardoning the indigenous cause against the abuses of Spanish rulers. When the independence movement prevailed, he was recalled to Madrid and, after dramatic events, died confined in a convent (cf. DHG, I, col. 10). Enrico Costanzi
