ABAD y QUEIPO, MANUEL JOSÉ. — Spanish magistrate and prelate, born in Asturias (Spain) in 1749, died in 1825. Having gone as a judge to Michoacán (New Spain) and subsequently been appointed bishop, he sought to promote a policy of conciliation in order to prevent Mexico’s separation from Spain, championing the cause of the indigenous peoples against the abuses of the Spanish rulers. Once the independence movement had prevailed, he was recalled to Madrid and, after dramatic vicissitudes, died confined to a convent (cf. DHG, I, col. 10).
