ABDON. – One of the minor judges, son of Hillél, a native of Pireathon, present-day Far'ata, 10 km southwest of Naplusa. A wealthy landowner, he had 41 sons and 30 grandsons, who rode 70 donkeys, an indication of prosperity and nobility (Iude, 5, 10; 10, 4). He was judge for eight years, probably in the region of Efraim. After his death, he was buried in his native city near a mountain which, perhaps because of an ancient colonization or a war episode, was called Amalecite (Iude, 12, 13–15).
