Also known as: Abdon ben Hillel

ABDON. - One of the minor judges, son of Hillel, a native of Pirathon, present-day Far'ata, 10 km southwest of Nablus. A wealthy landowner, he had 41 sons and 30 grandsons riding 70 donkeys, a sign of prosperity and nobility (Judg. 5:10; 10:4). A judge for eight years, probably in the region of Ephraim, after his death he was buried in his native town near a mountain which, perhaps from an ancient colonization or from a warlike episode, was called Amalekite (Judg. 12:13-15).
