ABDON AND SENNEN, Saints, Martyrs. - According to the Passio, which is of no historical value, they were kings of Persia, captured by Decius and killed in an amphitheater in Rome. In reality they are Roman martyrs of the 3rd century, buried in the cemetery of Pontian on the Via Portuense, where a painting of the 6th or 7th century depicts them, dressed in Eastern fashion, in the act of receiving the crown from the Savior. Their names appear in the Depositio Martyrum, in the Jeronymian Martyrology and in the ancient Roman Sacramentaries. Pope Adrian I (772-95) restored the cemetery basilica dedicated to them and Pope Nicholas I (858-62) their tomb, already adorned, it seems, by Pope Damasus. The bodies of the two martyrs were later transported to the basilica of St. Mark, and later still, part of them, to Arles-sur-Tech (France). Near the Colosseum there existed a church dedicated to them. Feast: July 30.
