AD MENTEM (IUXTA MENTEM, IUXTA MODUM)

AD MENTEM (iuxta mentem, iuxta modum). – This is one of the formulas frequently used in the customary replies issued by the dicasteries of the Roman Curia, especially by the Sacred Congregations. Its effect is to add to the rescript some condition or qualification that limits, defines, or even modifies its excessively absolute or generic meaning, or to prescribe conditions or qualifications for its execution. This interpretation, generally expressed by the words « Mens est... », is not always made public, but is communicated only to the persons concerned in the matter submitted.
