ADELAIDE (ADELHEID), IMPERATRICE, SANTA

ADELAIDE (Adelheid), Empress, Saint. - B. c. 931, d. at Selz, in Alsace, on 18 Dec. 999. Daughter of Rudolf II of Burgundy, she was the wife (947) of Lothair II, king of Italy (d. 950). Imprisoned by Berengar II, she managed to escape; she married Otto the Great at Pavia (951). A woman of extraordinary beauty, culture and piety, she exercised a beneficial influence in favor of the Church, founded monasteries, promoted the reform of Cluny, and temporarily governed the empire for her son Otto II and then for her grandson Otto III. After her death she immediately received the cult of a saint, confirmed by Urban II; her name does not appear, however, in the Martyr. Romanum. Feast on 16 Dec.
