Agassiz

AGASSIZ. - Swiss zoologist, b. at Môtier on 28 March 1807, d. at Cambridge, Mass., on 14 Dec. 1873. He popularized comparative anatomy, embryology and zoology in America. A believing spirit, he saw in the variety of forms the expression of divine omnipotence. "It is the manifestation of the divine thought as it is expressed in a part of that great whole which we call Nature"... (from Allg. Zool., Stuttgart 1855).
