ALFONSO IV of Aragon and III of Catalonia. - Born in 1299, died in 1336; ascended the throne in 1327 following the death of his father James II, after having completed the conquest of Sardinia, for which the Holy See and the Guelphs of Italy had lent him aid (1323). Soon, however, he clashed with Genoese rivalry. During the descent of Louis the Bavarian, he took an interest in Italian affairs and set out to expel the Moors from Granada, a project he failed to carry out.

ALFONSO di CARTAGENA (ALONSO DE SANTA MARÍA DE CARTAGENA). - Son of the converted judge Paolo di s. Maria, bishop of Burgos (1435), and counsellor to John II of Castile. He distinguished himself at the Council of Basel. He translated classical works. His writings, for the most part still unpublished, are poetic, theological, and historical. He died in 1456.

ALFONSO VI, king of CASTILE and of LEÓN, called the Brave. - B. 1030, d. 1109, son of Ferdinand I, under whom the great Christian conquests in the Iberian peninsula began. His father had divided the monarchy among his sons: A., who received León; Sancho, who received Castile; and Garcia, who received Galicia. But Sancho ousted his brothers, so that A. had to take refuge in Toledo with the Moorish king Al-Mamun; however, after Sancho was treacherously killed (1072), A. was proclaimed king of Castile and León, and after Garcia’s defeat, also of Galicia. As arbiter in the internecine struggles of the Arabs, he took advantage of the situation to conquer further lands, including Madrid, and especially Toledo (1085), which became the centre of Christian strength against the Crescent and the great hearth of the Spanish Church. During A.’s reign, the famous “Cid Campeador,” conqueror of Valencia, flourished. Also during his time, the Mozarabic liturgy was abolished and the Roman rite adopted, as had already been done in Aragon and Navarre. The arrival of the African Almoravids, who came to the aid of their coreligionists, embittered the last years of A., who saw the Christian kingdoms of the peninsula thus endangered. In the extreme western part of the peninsula, the county—and later kingdom—of Portugal began, by A.’s concession, to separate from Castile.

ALFONSO VII, emperor, king of CASTILE and of LEÓN. - B. 1126, d. 1157, son of Urraca of Castile and Raymond of Burgundy. After the death of this French prince, his mother married a second time, to Alfonso I, king of Aragon. The marriage was intended, as happened three centuries later, to achieve the desired union of almost the entire peninsula, but the Pope refused a dispensation for consanguinity, threatening excommunication if the two princes did not separate; the clergy and finally the nobility also declared against the Aragonese. A. was thus successful in his struggle against the Moors (from whom he took Almería) and the Christian kingdoms (some of which he reduced to tributary status), so that in a burst of glory he was proclaimed emperor at the cortes of León in 1135. On his deathbed, he divided the kingdom between his sons, Sancho III (Castile) and Ferdinand II (León).

ALFONSO VIII of Las Navas, king of CASTILE. - B. 1158, d. 1214, son of Sancho III, whom he succeeded while still a minor; this led to discord among the regents, and the Saracens took advantage of the situation to occupy several Christian cities, which A. later partly reconquered. He was defeated at the battle of Alarcos, but this disaster was turned to advantage by Pope Innocent III, who promoted the union of the Spanish monarchs against the common enemy.
