ALFONSO IV d'ARAGONA e III di CATALOGNA. – Born in 1299, died in 1336; he ascended the throne in 1327 following the death of his father Giacomo II, after having completed the conquest of Sardinia, for which the Holy See and the Italian Guelphs had assisted him (1323). He soon, however, came into conflict with Genoese rivalry. During Ludovico il Bavaro’s descent into Italy, he took an interest in Italian affairs and undertook to drive the Moors from Granada, a project he was unable to carry out.
