FRANCESCO SAVERIO ALTAMURA. — Painter, b. in Foggia in 1826, d. in Naples on 6 Jan. 1897. He reacted against the academism of the time, developing his own style within the realist movement.
He produced numerous works with religious subjects, among which *Christ and the Adulteress*, his first work (1847); *The Daughter of Jephthah*; *Jesus at the Column*; *Christ among the Pharisees*; *The Dead Madonna* and *The Madonna in Heaven* for the chapel of the Royal Palace in Naples; *The Annunciation* and other canvases for the church of Gastrignano de’ Greci (Lecce). Among his historical paintings, *The Triumph of Marius over the Cimbri* (Naples, Capodimonte Palace) was particularly admired.
