AMATI, CARLO. — Architect, born in Monza on 22 August 1776, died in Milan on 23 March 1852. He took part in completing the sides and façade of Milan Cathedral (1805–13). He applied academic principles to his major work, the church of S. Carlo in Milan (1836–47), built on the site of the former parish of S. Maria dei Servi, whose parish priest was his brother Giacomo, who contributed to the preparation of the plans for the new church. The result is a classicizing circular temple, covered by a hemispherical dome and preceded by an octastyle pronaos and propylaea surmounted by palaces. A. was also a writer on art and taught at the Accademia di Brera.
