Amati, Carlo

AMATI, CARLO. - Architect, b. in Monza on 22 Aug. 1776, d. in Milan on 23 March 1852. He took part in the completion of the sides and the facade of the cathedral of Milan (1805-13). He applied academic canons to his greatest work, the church of S. Carlo in Milan (1836-47), built on the site of the ancient parish of S. Maria dei Servi, whose parish priest was his brother Giacomo, who contributed to the elaboration of the plans for the new church. The result is a classicizing temple of circular form, covered by a hemispherical dome and preceded by an eight-columned pronaos and propylaea surmounted by buildings. The A. was also a writer on art and taught at the Accademia di Brera.
