ANGUIER, FRANÇOIS and MICHEL. — French sculptors from Eu, pupils of S. Guillain. FRANÇOIS (1604–69) executed numerous funerary monuments, including notable ones of Henry de Montmorency in the chapel of the Lycée de Moulins (formerly the Visitation convent) and of Jacques-Auguste de Thou, now in the Louvre. His brother MICHEL (1612–86) worked in Rome and was formed in the milieu dominated by Bernini and Algardi; the influence of the former is visible in the group of the Nativity, executed for the Parisian church of Val-de-Grâce (the original is now in the church of S. Rocco). Michel also contributed to the decoration of the Porte Saint-Denis in Paris.
