MONTMORENCY, HENRI I. - Son of Anne and of Madeleine of Savoy, b. at Chantilly in 1534, d. at Agde on 1 April 1614. In the war of religion he was at the head of the Catholics and defeated the Calvinists at Dreux, where Condé was taken prisoner. As governor of Languedoc he used rigorous repressive measures against the Protestants. In 1566 he was named marshal. But personal rivalry with Guise cooled his zeal: he offered no resistance to Coligny's army when the latter attacked his province.
After St. Bartholomew's Day, distrusting the court's intentions toward him, he came to a definite agreement with the Calvinists, who elected him their leader. Supported by the Calvinists and the Politiques, he succeeded in opening the negotiations that led to the Edict of Beaulieu. But in 1576 Catherine de' Medici managed to win him over to her side. Having thus become hateful to the Calvinists, he had to leave Toulouse. On the death of Henry III he followed the party of the King of Navarre, and in 1595 he prevented the intervention of the Duke of Savoy.
