MONTMORENCY, HENRI II. - Son of Henri I, born at Chantilly on 30 April 1595, died at Toulouse on 30 October 1632. From Henry IV he received the government of Languedoc. Louis XIII appointed him admiral in 1612. In 1625 he defeated the rebel Soubise; in 1629-30 he took part in the Piedmont campaign, winning at Avigliana and Saluzzo.
The policy of monarchical centralization pursued by Richelieu was necessarily bound to drive Montmorency into opposition, as one of the most authoritative representatives of the old aristocracy. The failure to grant him the office of constable was only an incidental cause of the break. In 1630, when the cardinal's position was thought to be shaken and his fall imminent, Gaston d'Orléans placed himself at the head of the malcontents. But the journée des dupes unexpectedly reaffirmed Richelieu's power. Gaston tried the fortune of arms: defeated, he fled to Nancy. Montmorency had joined the rebel, attempting to raise Languedoc. But the province did not follow him, and Montmorency, defeated at Castelnaudary by the marshal of Schomberg, was taken prisoner. Richelieu had him executed. And this execution marked the triumph of the cardinal, depriving the French nobility of any hope of preventing the consolidation of royal absolutism.
