MONTMORENCY, ANNE de. - Born at Chantilly on 12 November 1493, died at St-Denis on 12 November 1567. The name Anne was given to him by his godmother Anne of Brittany. He enjoyed the full favour of Francis I and took part in his campaigns. He was a prisoner with him at Pavia; then, once freed, he held the governorship of Languedoc. Lieutenant general, then constable, he defeated the imperial forces and in 1537 reconquered Piedmont.
When the cession of the Milanese made by Charles V to his son Philip caused France to lose all hope of regaining that province, Montmorency, who had become a supporter of a peaceful agreement with the Emperor, fell into disfavour and abandoned the court. He nevertheless returned there with Henry II, of whom he was for a long time the most listened-to counsellor. In 1551 he was named duke and peer. In the campaign of 1552-54 he suffered repeated defeats and at St. Quentin was taken prisoner. But the King kept his trust in him, and this allowed him to guide the negotiations of the peace of Cateau-Cambrésis. He subsequently took part in the war of religion and in 1567, while defending Paris against the Calvinists, defeated at St-Denis, he refused to surrender and was mortally wounded.
