ANGRA, DIOCESI di. – The capital city of the Azores, with a population of approximately 12,000 inhabitants, A. is the seat of a suffragan diocese of Lisbon, erected by Clement VII in 1533 under the title of S. Michele and confirmed by Paul III the following year (3 November), though under the name of S. Salvatore di A. It was suffragan to Funchal until 1550. The population, for the most part Catholic, is estimated at 275,000 inhabitants. There are 132 parishes and 275 diocesan priests.
