ANSELM V of the PUSTERLA. — Archbishop of Milan from 1126, d. at Rome on 14 Aug. 1136. He was continually at odds with the papacy. Supported by his people, he took the side of Conrad of Swabia and crowned him at Milan in 1128. He then aligned himself with the antipope Anacletus II, by whom he seems to have been created cardinal. Innocent II, at the Council of Piacenza, separated Genoa from the province of Milan and excommunicated him. A., deposed by the clergy and people, was captured while fleeing (1135) and taken to Rome, where he died shortly afterward.
