ARASSUAHY, DIOCESE of. — In the state of Minas Geraes (Brazil). The city, which extends across the plateaus west of the Serra do Chifre, is the seat of the diocese, erected on 25 Aug. 1913 with territory taken from the diocese of Diamantina; formerly a suffragan of Mariana, and therefore of Diamantina from 28 June 1917. On 2 Apr. 1914, some districts of the diocese of Montesclaros were annexed to II. The cathedral is dedicated to St Anthony of Padua. It has an area of 73,161 sq km, with 600,000 inhabitants, of whom 580,000 are Catholics; 29 parishes, 17 diocesan priests, and 28 religious priests.
