ARASSUAHY, DIOCESE OF. — In the state of Minas Geraes (Brazil). The city, which extends over the plateaus west of the Serra do Chifre, is the seat of the diocese, erected on 25 Aug. 1913 with territory taken from the diocese of Diamantina; formerly a suffragan of Mariana, then of Diamantina from 28 June 1917. On 2 Apr. 1914 several districts of the diocese of Montesclaros were annexed to II. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. It has an area of 73,161 sq. km., with 600,000 inhabitants, of whom 580,000 are Catholic; 29 parishes, 17 diocesan priests and 28 religious.
