MONT-LAURIER, DIOCESE of - Diocese in the province of Québec. As soon as he had taken possession of his see of Ottawa, Msgr. Charles Hugh Gauthier set to work on the organization of a new diocese. M.-L., detached from Ottawa, was erected by Pope Pius X on 21 April 1913. Its first bishop was Msgr. F.-S. Brunet (1913-22). The Cathedral is dedicated to Mary Most Holy.

A suffragan of Ottawa, the diocese has 54,185 Catholics: 51,185 French-speaking, about 800 English-speaking and about 1,300 of other languages. Non-Catholics number 2,200; 100 diocesan priests and 50 religious (Jesuits, Oblates, Priestly Fraternity) exercise the sacred ministry there. There are 7 male congregations and 10 female ones.

The diocese has 1 minor seminary, 57 churches and chapels, 50 parishes, 10 missions, 4 hospitals, 3 orphanages, 1 school of pedagogy, 1 school of arts and crafts, 1 school of agriculture, 1 scholasticate and 2 novitiates.

The area of the diocese is 5,600 square miles.
