MONT-LAURIER, DIOCESE of - A diocese in the province of Québec. As soon as he took possession of his see of Ottawa, Msgr Carlo Ugo Gauthier set to work organizing a new diocese. M.-L., detached from Ottawa, was erected by Pope Pius X on 21 Apr.

Suffragan of Ottawa, the diocese has 54,185 Catholics: 51,185 French-speaking, approximately 800 English-speaking, and approximately 1,300 of other languages. Non-Catholics number 2,200; 100 diocesan priests and 50 religious (Jesuits, Oblates, Priestly Fraternity) exercise the sacred ministry there. There are 7 male and 10 female congregations.

The diocese has 1 minor seminary, 57 churches and chapels, 50 parishes, 10 missions, 4 hospitals, 3 orphanages, 1 school of pedagogy, 1 school of arts and crafts, 1 agricultural school, 1 scholasticate, and 2 novitiates.

The area of the diocese is 5,600 sq. miles.
