ARACAJU, DIOCESE of. - Capital of the state of Sergipe (Brazil), situated on the Atlantic about 300 km. to the northeast of Bahia,

A. is the seat of a diocese, erected on 15 Dec. 1909, at first as a suffragan of S. Salvador da Bahia, then of Maceió from 13 Feb. 1920. The cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The diocese comprises the state of Sergipe, which has an area of 21,552 sq. km. with about half a million inhabitants, almost all Catholics.
