ARACAJÚ, DIOCESI DI

ARACAJU, Diocese of. - Capital of the state of Sergipe (Brazil), situated on the Atlantic Ocean about 300 km northeast of Bahia, Aracaju is the see of a diocese erected on 15 December 1909, first as a suffragan of S. Salvatore of Bahia and then of Maceió from 13 February 1920. The cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The diocese comprises the state of Sergipe, which has an area of 21,552 sq km and a population of about half a million, almost all of them Catholic.
