A. is the seat of a diocese, erected on 15 December 1909, initially as a suffragan of S. Salvatore della Bahia, and then of Maceió from 13 February 1920. The cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The diocese comprises the state of Sergipe, which has an area of 21,552 sq km and approximately half a million inhabitants, almost all Catholics.
