ARNOLDO, bishop of the island of MAGUELONE. — He occupied the episcopal see from 1029 until his death in 1059. An engineer and architect, he was a precursor of Gregory VII in his efforts to reform the canons of his church, whom he induced to accept the common life. In order to succeed more fully in this aim and defend the island from the Saracens, he constructed gigantic defensive works. The cathedral of Maguelone, too, is his work, and he is buried there. He attended several councils.
