ARNOLDO, VESCOVO DELL'ISOLA MAGUELONE

ARNOLDO, bishop of the island of Maguelone. He held the episcopal see from 1029 until his death in 1059. An engineer and architect, he was a precursor of Gregory VII in his efforts to reform the canons of his church, whom he induced to accept the common life. To achieve this aim more effectively and to defend the island from the Saracens, he constructed massive defensive works. The cathedral of Maguelone is also his work, and there he is buried. He attended several councils.
