Arnold, Abbot of Lübeck

ARNOLDO, ABATE DI LUBECCA

Also known as: Latin: Arnoldus Lubecensis, Arnoldus abbas Lubecensis

ARNOLD, Abbot of Lübeck. - German chronicler, who lived in the 12th century and was still alive in 1212. After spending some time at Brunswick, he became, in 1177, abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Lübeck. He wrote, in seven books, the continuation of Helmold's Chronicle, which narrates events from 1171 to 1209. The information he provides is not, however, very worthy of belief. The Chronica Slavorum Arnoldi, preceded by that of Helmold, is edited in G. H. Pertz, in MGH, Scriptores XXI, pp. 100-250.
