ARCIMBOLDI, GIOVANANGELO. - Papal legate, b. in Milan around 1485, d. in the same city on 6 April 1555. A nephew of Cardinal Giovanni Arcimboldi, he took a degree in law and for some time held appointments from the Duke of Milan Massimiliano Sforza, in whose service his father was. Having then come to Rome, he was appointed protonotary by Leo X and, in 1514, apostolic nuncio. In this capacity and with the mission of disseminating the indulgence for the construction of the Basilica of St. Peter, he was sent to the Netherlands, to Germany and finally to the Scandinavian countries. Recalled to Italy, he stopped in Milan and was sent, in 1522, by Francesco Sforza to Spain, to pay compliments, in the name of the duke, to Adrian VI, recently elected Pope. Having then come to Rome, still as legate, he was elected, in 1526, by Clement VII bishop of Novara. In 1550 he was transferred to the archbishopric of Milan.
He wrote: Statuta Ripariae s. Iulii; Ordinationes pro Clero et sua Dioecesi; Catalogus Haereticorum (Milan 1554); and «collegit atque correxit» the new Milanese constitutions.
