ARCIMBOLDI, GIOVANNANGELO. – Papal legate, born in Milan around 1485, died in the same city on 6 April 1555. Nephew of Cardinal Giovanni Arcimboldi, he graduated in law and for some time held positions under the Duke of Milan, Massimiliano Sforza, in whose service his father was. ARCINALLO - He bears the insignia of his priesthood: a crown with the image of Jupiter in the centre and the two lateral images of Attis on his head; his hair arranged in a feminine manner; on his breast the encolpium of Attis; a pomegranate in his right hand; a dish of fruit, including a pinecone, in his left. Recalled to Italy, he stopped in Milan and was sent, in 1522, by Francesco Sforza to Spain to offer, in the duke’s name, congratulations to Adriano VI, recently elected Pope. Having then come to Rome, still as legate, he was elected bishop of Novara in 1526 by Clemente VII. In 1550 he was transferred to the archbishopric of Milan.

He wrote: Statuta Ripariae s. Iulii; Ordinationes pro Clero et sua Dioecesi; Catalogus Haereticorum (Milano 1554); and «collegit atque correxit» the new Milanese constitutions.
