MADERNO, ALESSANDRO. – Barnabite theologian, born at Capolago (Como) on 15 May 1617, died at Rome on 6 April 1685. He taught theology for many years in the Arcimboldi schools of Milan, then at Lodi and at Rome.
Appointed Provincial of Lombardy in 1659, he went to Rome as Assistant General in 1655; then elected Prepositus General in 1680. He was also Consultor of the Holy Office.
He published a *Cursus theologicus* (3 vols., Rome 1671-1675), in which he expounded all the treatises according to the order of the *Summa Theologica* of St Thomas. It is a manual intended for students and teachers of his Order, which bears Maderno’s personal contribution and that of the Barnabite theologians to the discussions of all the problems agitated in the schools. It does not belong to any particular theological school, indeed it is notable for a frank freedom in the face of every authority.
