ARCHINTO, FILIPPO. - Archbishop. B. in Milano on 5 July 1495, d. in Bergamo on 21 June 1558. His compatriots entrusted him with numerous important embassies to Carlo V, both in Spain and in Italy. Having come to Rome, he was successively elected cleric of the camera, apostolic protonotary, and referendary of the two Signatures. In 1537 he held the office of governor of Rome, and on 24 March 1539 he was created bishop of Borgo S. Sepolcro. He was chosen by the Pope to bless the marriage of Ottavio Farnese to Margherita d'Austria, and in 1540 he was appointed commissary general of the troops that occupied Camerino in favour of Ottavio Farnese. In 1542 he was elected vicar general of Rome, and in 1546 he was transferred to the episcopal see of Saluzzo. Under Giulio III he was sent as nuncio to Venezia in 1554. In 1556 Paolo IV appointed him archbishop of Milano, but he did not take possession of his diocese. He wrote several
