ARCHINTO, Filippo. — Archbishop. Born in Milan on 5 July 1495, died in Bergamo on 21 June 1558. He was entrusted by his fellow citizens with numerous and important embassies to Charles V, both in Spain and in Italy. Having come to Rome, he was successively appointed chamberlain, apostolic protonotary, and referendary of the two Signatures. In 1537 he held the office of governor of Rome, and on 24 March 1539 was created Bishop of Borgo San Sepolcro. He was chosen by the Pope to bless the marriage of Ottavio Farnese and Margaret of Austria, and in 1540 was named general commissioner of the troops that occupied Camerino in favour of Ottavio Farnese. In 1542 he was elected vicar general of Rome, and in 1546 was transferred to the episcopal see of Saluzzo. Under Julius III he was sent in 1554 as nuncio to Venice. In 1556 he was appointed by Paul IV Archbishop of Milan, but did not take possession of his diocese. He wrote several works.
