ARCHINTO, GIUSEPPE. - Cardinal, b. in Milano on 16 Apr. 1631, d. there on 9 Apr. 1712. In 1675 he took a degree in law at Pavia and subsequently entered the College of Jurists of Milano. After spending some time at Ingolstadt and travelling through various countries of Europe, he came to Rome, where in 1679 he was appointed protonotary, then referendary of the two Signatures and vice-legate at Bologna. He held the abbeys of S. Giovanni di Vertemate di Como and S. Giovanni delle Vigne di Lodi. Nunciatures at Firenze, Venezia, and Spain were entrusted to him, having been consecrated archbishop of Tessalonica. On 18 May 1699 he received the archbishopric of Milano. In the same year, on 14 Dec., he was created cardinal of the title of S. Prisca by Innocenzo XII. In 1701 he was sent as legate a latere to the wedding of Gabriella di Garcia and Filippo V di Spagna. There survive by him: Acta Visitationis, an oration, the report on the Spanish legation, and letters.
