ARCHINTO, GIUSEPPE. - Cardinal, b. in Milan on 16 April 1631, d. there on 9 April 1712. In 1675 he took his degree in law at Pavia and then entered the College of Jurists of Milan. After spending some time at Ingolstadt and traveling through various countries of Europe, he came to Rome, where, in 1679, he was appointed protonotary, then referendary of the two Signatures and vice-legate at Bologna. He held the abbeys of S. Giovanni di Vertemate of Como and of S. Giovanni delle Vigne of Lodi. Nunciatures at Florence, Venice and in Spain were entrusted to him, he having been consecrated archbishop of Thessalonica. On 18 May 1699 he received the archbishopric of Milan. In the same year, on 14 December, he was created a cardinal of the title of S. Prisca by Innocent XII. In 1701 he was sent as legate a latere to the marriage of Gabriella di Garcia with Philip V of Spain. There survive from him: Acta Visitationis, an oration, the report of the Spanish legation and letters.
