CROOKSTON, DIOCESE of. - A city in Minnesota (U. S. A.) and the seat of a diocese suffragan to S. Paolo di Minnesota.
Its territory, of approximately 44,500 sq. km., comprises the counties of Brooker, Beltrami, Clay, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Mahnomen, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau in the State of Minnesota. In 1949 there were 31,250 Catholics out of 231,263 inhabitants, 58 diocesan priests, 21 religious, 52 parishes, 18 chapels, 36 missions and 4 stations, 4 academies and « High Schools », and 13 parochial schools; in 1947 there were 128 conversions. The diocese also has 2 male religious institutes (Benedictines, Oblates of Mary Immaculate) and 4 female ones. C. was erected as a diocese on 31 Dec. 1909 through the division of the archdiocese of S. Paolo, of which it has remained suffragan.
