CROOKSTON, DIOCESE OF. - A city in Minnesota (U.S.A.) and the see of a suffragan diocese of Saint Paul in Minnesota.
Its territory, covering approximately 44,500 sq. km, comprises the counties of Brooker, Beltrami, Clay, Clearwater, Hubbard, Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Mahnomen, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, and Roseau in the State of Minnesota. In 1949 there were 31,250 Catholics out of a total population of 23,263, 58 diocesan priests, 21 religious, 52 parishes, 18 chapels, 36 missions and 4 stations, 4 academies and high schools, 13 parochial schools; in 1947 there were 128 conversions. The diocese also has 2 male religious institutes (Benedictines, Oblates of Mary Immaculate) and 4 female ones. It was erected as a diocese on 31 December 1909 by separation from the archdiocese of Saint Paul, of which it remains a suffragan.
