COVINGTON, Diocese of. - City in the State of Kentucky (USA) and seat of a diocese suffragan of Louisville.

Its territory, situated east of the Kentucky River, extends for about 44,600 sq km. In 1947, out of 4,350,446 inhabitants, Catholics numbered 65,000, with 133 diocesan priests and 17 regulars, 69 parishes, 23 chapels, 24 mission stations, 15 high schools, 9 colleges and academies for women, 51 parochial schools. In the same year there were 1,416 baptisms and 310 conversions. The diocese also includes the Benedictine abbeys of St. Bernard (Corbin, Middlesbore) and of St. Vincent, the Redemptorist Fathers and the Brothers of Mary, and 10 religious houses for women.

C. was erected as a diocese as a suffragan of Cincinnati on July 28, 1853. In Dec. 1937 it became part of the new ecclesiastical province of Louisville.
