COVINGTON, DIOCESE OF - A city in the State of Kentucky (USA) and the see of a suffragan diocese of Louisville.
Its territory, situated to the east of the Kentucky River, extends over approximately 44,600 sq. km. In 1947, out of a population of 4,350,446, Catholics numbered 65,000, served by 133 diocesan priests and 17 religious priests, 69 parishes, 23 chapels, 24 missionary stations, 15 high schools, 9 colleges and academies for women, and 51 parochial schools. In the same year, there were 1,416 baptisms and 310 conversions. The diocese also includes the Benedictine abbeys of St. Bernard (Corbin, Middlesboro) and St. Vincent, the Redemptorist Fathers, the Marist Brothers, and 10 houses of religious women.
Covington was erected as a diocese and made suffragan to Cincinnati on 28 July 1853. In December 1937, it became part of the new ecclesiastical province of Louisville.
