ECCLESIASTICAL PROVINCE. — It is the union of several dioceses—called in such cases comprovincial or suffragan dioceses—into a single territorial district, headed by an archbishop or metropolitan, who is normally the bishop of the most important of them, known for this reason as the archiepiscopal or metropolitan see (v. METROPOLITA).
