Ecclesiastical Province

ECCLESIASTICAL PROVINCE. – It is the union of several dioceses—called, in this case, co-provincial or suffragan dioceses—within a single territorial jurisdiction, headed by an archbishop or metropolitan, who is ordinarily the bishop of the most important of them, for which reason it is called an archiepiscopal or metropolitan see (v. METROPOLITA).
