Inter praecipuas
Bull erecting the ecclesiastical provinces of Arequipa, Cusco and Trujillo
(AREQUIPA—CUSCO—TRUJILLO.) FROM THE ECCLESIASTICAL PROVINCE OF LIMA, IN THE PERUVIAN REPUBLIC, CERTAIN SUFFRAGAN SEES ARE SEPARATED, FROM WHICH THREE NEW ECCLESIASTICAL PROVINCES OF AREQUIPA, CUSCO, AND TRUJILLO ARE ERECTED. PIUS, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MATTER
1 Among the principal duties of Our apostolic office is indeed that by which We are impelled to take care that the ecclesiastical circumscription of the Catholic world may respond more aptly to the circumstances of times and places and to the necessities of the Christian faithful. This care is now demanded of Us by the Churches of the Peruvian Republic, which have hitherto formed a single ecclesiastical province, namely that of Lima. Since this province extends most widely both in the multitude of the faithful and in the extent of territory, it seemed opportune to divide it and to establish new provinces therein. Wherefore, having obtained the favorable vote of Our venerable Brother Ferdinand Cento, Archbishop with the title of Seleucia in Pieria and Apostolic Nuncio in the Peruvian Republic, and having supplied, insofar as it is necessary, the consent of those to whom it pertains or who presume that it pertains to them, having maturely considered the matter, by the fullness of Our apostolic power, We separate the cathedral Churches of Arequipa, Puno, Ayacucho or Cusco, Huancayo, Trujillo, Cajamarca, Chachapoyas and Pura from the ecclesiastical province of Lima, to which they have hitherto belonged. This province shall henceforth consist of the metropolitan Church of Lima itself and of the suffragan dioceses of Huancayo and Huaraz. From the aforesaid cathedral Churches separated from the province of Lima, We erect three new ecclesiastical provinces, namely those of Arequipa, Cusco, and Trujillo.
2 The ecclesiastical province of Arequipa is formed from the Church of Arequipa itself, which We raise to the rank of a metropolitan church, and from the cathedral Church of Puno, which We constitute as suffragan to it. The province of Cusco shall consist of the same Church of Cusco, which We likewise elevate to the dignity of a Metropolitan, and of the cathedral Church of Ayacucho or Huancayo, as suffragan.
3 Let the Province of Trujillo finally embrace the Church of Trujillo itself, which we declare to be Metropolitan, and the Cathedral Churches of Cajamarca, Chachapoyas and Piura, as suffragans. To each and every one of these new metropolitan Churches and their Archbishops for the time being, we grant all the rights, privileges, insignia, honours and prerogatives which the other metropolitan Churches and their Prelates enjoy and possess by common law. Moreover, we grant to the Archbishops the particular faculty of bearing the cross before them within the limits of their province, and also of using the sacred Pallium according to the liturgical laws, provided however that this shall have been duly requested and obtained from the Apostolic See in sacred consistory. Likewise we bind these same new metropolitan Churches and their Prelates with the same burdens and obligations with which the other metropolitan Churches and their Archbishops are bound. We elevate each and every Chapter of the cathedral Churches of Arequipa, Cusco and Trujillo to the rank of a Metropolitan Chapter and therefore grant to them the rights, privileges, honours and insignia, as well as the burdens and obligations which are proper to the other Metropolitan Chapters. To ensure that all the above dispositions and constitutions are carried out, we delegate the venerable Brother Ferdinand Cento, whom we mentioned above, our Nuncio in the Peruvian Republic, and we therefore grant to him the necessary and opportune faculties, even to subdelegate, for the purpose in question, any man constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, with the charge upon him to transmit to the S. Congregation of Consistorial Affairs an authentic copy of the acts of the execution performed as soon as it shall be possible. These present Letters and whatever is contained in them, even from the fact that anyone concerned, or who presumes his interest to be concerned, has not been heard or has not consented to the foregoing, even if they should be worthy of express, specific and individual mention, can never at any time be noted, impugned or called into question on account of the vice of subreptitiousness or obreption or nullity, or of our intention, or any other defect, however substantial and unforeseen; but we will that they, as made and emanating from certain knowledge and fullness of power, shall perpetually be valid and shall be, and shall produce their full and complete effects and obtain them, and ought to be inviolably observed by all to whom it pertains; and if it should happen that anything contrary to these be attempted by anyone, by whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly, we will and decree that it be and shall be entirely null and void; notwithstanding, insofar as it is necessary, the rules established in synodal, provincial, general and universal Councils, special or general constitutions and apostolic ordinances and any other dispositions of our Predecessors the Roman Pontiffs and any other things to the contrary whatsoever, even those worthy of special mention, all of which we hereby derogate. We will moreover that copies or excerpts of these Letters, even if printed, subscribed however by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a man constituted in ecclesiastical dignity or office, shall be given the same credence as would be given to these Letters themselves, if they themselves were exhibited or shown. Let no one be permitted to infringe upon this page of dismemberment, removal, subjection, constitution, concession, statute, mandate, delegation, derogation and our will, or to act contrary to it. If anyone, however, should presume to attempt this with rash audacity, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
4 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-three, on the twenty-third day of the month of May, in the fifth year of our Pontificate.

Quam quidem curam nunc a Nobis postulant Peruvianae Reipublicae Ecclesiae, unicam hucusque ecclesiasticam provinciam efformantes, Limanawn videlicet.
